Diary of a Confused DBA…..

21. Installation of ECC6. – An Experience itself

Here I am trying to write my experience on installation of ECC6. This is better to admit that, SAP and its installation over SLES 10 was very tough nut for me to crack. Infact I better say shamelessly that I have failed in that operation for 16 times….!! ? I was a newbie in SAP and really speaking I never liked to be spoon fed in any case and ultimately I succeeded on 17 th Chance. thank God I never forgot the story of King Arthur.

With the same vision in mind, I took the job of installing ECC 6. Once again it was Suse, I mean SuSE Linux Enterprise Server but the version was SP1. The hardware I used is the blade server HS21 from IBM and had a storage DS 4700. I am writing this here, as how I did it…I dont want to raise any technical / functional debates but will be glad If I receive any suggestion from any reader.

My approach of doing the same was like finalising the requirements, gathering the requirements, doing installation, backing up installation, testing and final release. I will better try to give some charts below on this.

This was my requirement analysis.

Srl Sub
srl
Description Qty Unit
1   SAP Software Media. (Netweaver 2005 SR 1) 1 Nos
2   Database Software Media (oracle 10 G 64 Bit) 1 Nos
4   Database Software Patch Media if any
5   SLES 10 Media 1 Nos
6   Server 1 Nos
1 IBM Blade Server Available 1
2 Native storage for OS and software dumps and patches (Raid 1) 100 GB
3 Native swap partition. 2 nos of swap partition 16 GB each. 32 GB
  4 Shared storage for /usr/sap (RAID 5) 20 GB
  5 Shared storage for /sapmnt (RAID 5) 20 GB
  6 Shared storage for /oracle (RAID 5) 90 GB
7   Fixing up SID (3 Characters only) 1 Nos
8   Fixing up Server Name 11 Characters 1 Nos
9   Fix IP in server VLAN 1 Nos

I feel I should also reveal the SAP Notes which I went thru for this.

Note No – 709140 Recommended JDK VM settings WEBAS 630 640 7.0.pdf.
Note No – Note 819830 – Oracle Database 10g Additional Information on upgrade UNIX
Note No – Note 841728 – Oracle Database 10g – Software installation problems 10.2.0
Note No – 171356 linux installaltion notes.

All the above SAP note gives you enough to deal or tackle the installation. Here is another chart, which will show the media requirement for installation.

Srl Product CD No Description
1 51032893 SAP Netweaver 2004S SR2 Kernel 700 (LINUX x86_64 64bit)
2 51032715 SAP ERP 2005 Support Package Stack 9

10 51032260 SAP Business Suite 2005 Installation Master for : SAP Netweaver 2004s, SAP ERP 2005 SR2

So I accomplished two very much vital steps of the requirement. This is mandatory for any installtion project. This installation has four following parts, which I am writing in the subsequent pages …

  • Preparing OS and system for SAP installation.
  • Installation of SAP Central Instance.
  • Installation SAP Database.
  • Post-Installation tasks, i.e. Applying patches, upgrades etc.

  11. Dear Saneeb,

Do not bother, just you need to check in the Oraparam.ini file as well as /etc/SuSE-Release file.. I also encountered the same issue in my earlier days. Please check the following link.
    * For SuSE-Release file check the following link 1. Preparing OS and system for SAP installation.
    * For Oraparam.ini file please check the following link 3. Installation of Database

If this works vote my pages and refer to others…..
    Thanks and regards,

    Soumen.
