A couple of days back, when we were learning SAP spool configuration, this thought strike in my mind. What is the maximum effected area, where some small tweaks in the spool configuration can help business process.

The most sensitive are in a live business is the logistics. The raw material coming in and the finished goods going out, this actually holds the key of success.  Efficiency of business process in this segment gives you better running of business. And when you are running SAP as tool to accomplish your business processes, importance should lie on its ability of running faster with accuracy. The logistics process is always associated with some mandatory documents like invoices, excise and necessary tax papers which accompanies with the finished goods carrying vehicles.  And these documents need to printed and printed easily and faster.

So, it is apparently clear, in cases where the rates are very high, a tuned printing, which may only saving 20 secs, can became vital, very vital and life saver. So what we do need to here?

I think it is always better to use the location of TemSe to the file system instead of the database. This will always gives better performance because, because the additional headache of querying the spool data from database, and then creating the output request will be eliminated. The big is your data base is the more this will be efficient.  How this can be accomplished? A simpler way doing this by changing the TemSe location from Database to file system. The parameter used for this purpose is rspo/storage_location. We need to provide a value G here, which will then save the spool request to global directory additionally specified by the profile parameter rsts/files/root/G. An alternate value L can also be used, which makes the things much faster but then we need to ensure that generating, processing and spool work process is running on the same server. Because this time the spool is generated locally to the spool server. If someone is having the load balancing configured then it is better to avoid the value.

There are the other path also by changing the individual storage location of an output device in transaction SPAD. And this is most important. In a running business setup, it is better to define some spool devices for those points (highly important in the perspective of logistics, like weigh-bridge, the material in gate as the finished goods out gates. Then apply the alternate storage location for these devices.

Two important SAP notes in this regard are ….

  1. Note 20176 – Where is the spool request saved?
  2. Note 821519 – Front-end printing with control technology
